A restricted vent
Lint, a crushed flexible hose, a long duct run, or a stuck exterior flap all trap moist air in the dryer. Clothes stay damp and the dryer runs hot and long.
If clothes need two or three cycles to dry, the dryer is usually not moving enough air or not making enough heat. A restricted vent is the leading cause, and it is also a fire risk, so it is worth taking seriously.

Dryer-sheet residue can form a film on the screen that you cannot see. Air cannot pass through it even when the screen looks clean.
Many dryers use metal strips in the drum to sense dampness. When they are coated, the dryer misjudges how wet the load is and can end the cycle early or run too long.
A heating element or gas burner that is working weakly dries slowly instead of failing completely, which makes the problem easy to miss.
Packed drums do not tumble freely, so air cannot move through the clothes.
These steps are safe for most homeowners. If a step feels beyond your comfort level, skip it and call.
Safety first. Do not keep running a dryer you believe has a blocked vent. Stop and have the duct cleaned or inspected if the dryer feels very hot to the touch or smells like it is burning.
Call if drying times stay long after the screen and vent have been cleaned, if the outside airflow is weak, or if the dryer is very hot on the exterior. A vent cleaning or a heating-system check may be needed.
Appliance Doctor services dryers, including premium and commercial-style laundry brands such as Alliance and Speed Queen, in Panama City and Northwest Florida.

Humidity makes lint pack tighter and drying slower, and salt air can corrode vent flaps and electrical contacts. Long or hidden vent runs through attics and walls are common and fill with lint quietly. Cleaning the entire run, not only the lint screen, is worthwhile in coastal homes.
A slow dryer and a dryer that does not heat often share the same root cause: poor airflow. Technicians check airflow first because heat problems and safety-device trips both follow from it. Fixing the vent restores performance and reduces the risk of a repeat failure.
It depends on use, vent length, and routing. A practical approach is to inspect and clean it at least once a year, and more often with heavy use or long runs.
Dryer-sheet residue can leave an invisible film. Washing the screen with soapy water removes it.
It can be, because restricted airflow causes heat to build up in the dryer and the duct. If you notice a burning smell or extreme heat, stop using it. See also dryer not heating.
Next step. If drying stays slow after the safe airflow checks, contact us with the dryer model and whether every load is affected.
