Washing Machine Not Spinning or Draining: Causes & Checks

A washer that fills but will not drain, or drains but will not spin, usually has a blockage, a load problem, or a failed switch or pump. A few checks can sort out which one.

Common causes

What usually causes it

A clogged pump filter or drain hose

Front-load washers have a small filter or coin trap that catches socks, coins, and lint. When it clogs, water cannot leave, and the washer will not spin.

An unbalanced load

Washers often stop or retry a spin when a load is bunched up on one side. Heavy items such as blankets are common culprits.

A lid switch or door lock failure

The washer will not spin if it does not believe the lid or door is closed and locked. These are safety devices and should never be bypassed.

A jammed pump impeller

A small object in the pump can stop the impeller, so the washer hums without moving water.

A worn belt, motor coupler, or motor

On some models, a worn drive part lets the motor run without turning the drum.

Safe checks

What you can check yourself

These steps are safe for most homeowners. If a step feels beyond your comfort level, skip it and call.

  • Redistribute the load, remove heavy items, and try the spin cycle again.
  • Check that the lid or door closes fully and latches.
  • For front-load washers, open the filter access panel at the bottom front. Put towels and a shallow pan down first, since water will come out, then clean out the filter.
  • Check the drain hose behind the washer for kinks and make sure it is not pushed too far into the standpipe.
  • Try a standalone drain-and-spin cycle once the load is balanced.

Safety first. Unplug the washer before reaching into the pump area. Never bypass a lid or door switch to force a spin.

When to call

When it is time to call a technician

Call if water does not drain after cleaning the filter and hose, if the pump hums but nothing moves, if you hear grinding or smell burning, or if the lid or door lock seems faulty.

Service visit

$150 service visit & diagnostic fee

The fee covers the technician's trip, diagnosis, and basic repairs that take under 30 minutes. The fee is not credited toward a larger repair. Local factors

Coastal Florida factors and what technicians look for

Humidity and the minerals in your water supply contribute to lint and soap residue buildup in pumps and hoses, and front-load washers are especially vulnerable to gasket mold and corrosion in humid, salty air. Leaving the door ajar between loads helps the drum dry.

Technician insight

The majority of drain problems are blockages, and many washers have an easy access point for the filter. Technicians check the filter and hose first, then test the pump and the switches. A washer that fills but does not drain tells a different story than one that drains but does not spin.

Questions

Common questions

Why does my washer stop mid-cycle with water still in it?

Usually a drain problem such as a clogged filter or hose, or a pump issue. Unbalanced loads can also cause it to pause or stop before the spin.

Can I bypass the lid switch?

No. The lid or door lock is a safety device that keeps the drum from spinning when it is open. If it is faulty, it needs to be repaired.

Is it worth repairing an older washer?

It depends on the age and the part. See our repair or replace guide.

Next step. If the washer still will not spin or drain, request service and include the model number, any error code, and whether water remains in the tub.
