Natural Gas vs. Propane: What to Know Before Adding Gas to Your Home

Natural gas and propane (LP gas) are different fuels. An appliance made for one must not be assumed safe on the other.

Planning

Before you add gas

  • Confirm which fuel is available. Find out whether natural gas service reaches the property. If not, propane may be an option with a suitable tank installation, subject to local rules.
  • List every appliance. Account for ranges, fireplaces, outdoor kitchens, lanterns, dryers, and water heaters together. Adding one more appliance takes more than a physical connection.
  • Have the system checked. A professional should address existing piping, pipe sizing, supply pressure, shutoffs, connections, ventilation, and combustion air, and confirm permit and inspection rules.
  • Check each appliance. Verify the rating plate, approved fuel, and maker conversion instructions. Conversions need approved parts and procedures, not just a different supply. Do not assume a used appliance can be converted.
  • Use a licensed professional. Florida regulates LP-gas work. Verify licensing and permit rules for your job before work begins.
