Humming but not spinning
A jammed grinding plate is the usual cause. Turn off power before freeing a jam, and never reach into the disposal.
A disposal that hums, jams, leaks, or will not run can usually be narrowed down quickly. We service disposals as part of our home appliance work in Panama City and Northwest Florida.
A jammed grinding plate is the usual cause. Turn off power before freeing a jam, and never reach into the disposal.
A tripped overload (reset button), a breaker, a GFCI outlet, a switch, or a failed motor can be the reason.
Leaks at the sink flange, the dishwasher inlet, or the drain connection can often be repaired. A leak from the housing itself usually means replacement.
Grease, fibrous food, and buildup can slow the drain or cause odors. We check the disposal, the trap, and the connections.
Never put your hand in a disposal. Turn off power at the wall switch and the breaker, or unplug it, before freeing a jam with a tool. Use a hex key or a wooden spoon handle, not your fingers.
The fee covers the technician's trip, diagnosis, and basic repairs that take under 30 minutes. The fee is not credited toward a larger repair. If a repair needs more time, parts, or specialized work, we give you a repair quote before proceeding. Repairs carry a 30-day labor & diagnostic warranty. See warranty terms.
Many dishwashers drain through the disposal. If a new disposal was installed and the dishwasher will not drain, a plastic knockout plug in the disposal inlet may not have been removed. A clogged disposal can also back up into the dishwasher. See our dishwasher not draining guide and our dishwasher repair page.
The grinding plate is usually jammed. Many disposals have a socket on the bottom where a hex key can free the jam. Turn off power at the switch and breaker first, and never use your hand.
Most disposals have a red reset button on the bottom of the unit. If the disposal will not run at all, press it, then check the switch, the breaker, and any GFCI outlet.
Yes. A clogged disposal, or a knockout plug that was never removed from a new disposal, can stop the dishwasher from draining. See dishwasher not draining.
Tell us what you have and what is wrong when you call, and we will confirm whether repair or replacement makes sense for your situation.
